WalletHub has released its annual list of the best and worst states for women, and the 2020 report also shows how women are faring in the US today and where they can find the best opportunities relative to where they live. The report was issued in time for International Women’s Day on March 8 and Women’s History Month in March. According to WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzalez, the report was also inspired by the sobering statistics when it comes to women in America—including the fact that women still represent almost two thirds of all minimum wage workers in the country and sexual harassment remains a prominent issue. “The report was prompted by Women's History Month, and the fact that women only hold 23.7% of the seats in Congress despite making up 51% of the U.S. population,” says Gonzalez. “With this in mind, we wanted to identify the most women-friendly states. We did that by looking at economic and social factors, as well as healthcare and safety. WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 24 key indicators of living standards for women, using data like median earnings for women workers, preventive health care, female homicide rate and more. "There are several factors that contributed to Massachusetts being at the top of the list, including one of the lowest unemployment rates for women, high job security, and the low share of women living in poverty,” says Gonzalez. In addition, more than 90% of women in Massachusetts were able to afford a doctor visit in the past year. The state has an almost 91% high school graduation rate for women, among the highest in the country. But Massachusetts' strongest suite is healthcare. “It has high quality women's hospitals, more than 85% of women have a personal doctor and the female uninsured rate is the smallest nationwide,” says Gonzalez. “Most women report being in good health, and the state tops all the others in terms of preventive healthcare. Massachusetts also has some of the lowest obesity, suicide and homicide rates amongst women, as well as high life expectancy." Louisiana sat at the bottom of WalletHub’s list for the second year in a row. Gonzales says that the biggest factors holding Louisiana at the bottom of the list include the unemployment rate for women, the large share of women living in poverty and the low high school graduation rate for women. “The state also ranks low in terms of friendliness towards working moms, women's equality and babies,” says Gonzalez. In addition, Louisiana's share of women with good health is one of the lowest in the country, as is the percentage of physically active women. “As a direct consequence, the state has a large share of women who are obese, as well as low life expectancy for women,” says Gonzalez. “In terms of safety, the female homicide rate is one of the highest nationwide."
