This event has passed. ‘Looking for Love’ by Menelik Shabazz. 15th January 2016 - 7:45 pm. Event Navigation. Now that “dating” has again become a topic of brow-furrowing media concern, with Tinder being wheeled out as the villain, it’s a relief to come across something on the subject with laidback warmth. The film moves across various issues, trivial and serious, including how long a steady relationship is supposed to last before the woman is entitled to expect a marriage proposal, to the ethical distinctions between cheating and having sex with someone who is cheating, and even to the toxic social residue of slavery and how much that can be blamed for inherited patterns of irresponsibility and enabling. There is a little bit of Hallmark-card-type philosophising, but likability and charm as well. Film followed by Q&A with film maker, Menelik Shabazz. He says ‘It is a film about love and relationships between man and woman in the 21st century. Why are there so many single people of all ages out there? What is love? How do we keep a good relationship going? We all need love but why do we sabotage the very thing we need? What is the backdrop to our often dysfunctional behaviour and what does mum and dad have to do with it? I am going in real deep on this one, taking people to places many have never been before or rarely visit- in mind, body and soul. I have got interviews with people who are single, in relationships, psychologists, relationships coaches, spoken word artists all giving real talk about the thing that really matters in our life. It’s not all serious we got a number of interviews with comedians (Kojo, Eddie Kadi, Slim, Andi Osho, Mr Cee, and Donna Spence) which I guarantee you will have you in stitches.’ Dir: Menelik Shabazz, 2015, UK.
